International Day Spa: What inspired Mimi to build International Skin & Body?

International Skin & Body Care grew out of my love for Spas, World Travel, Education, The Beauty Business, and a Quest for “The Secret” of Beautiful Skin.
As a 3-year-old, I loved going to the Beauty Parlor with Mommy. At 6 my mother took me to a spa in Cuba to soak in a private mineral bath. In Baden Baden Germany when I was 12, I discovered what “Taking the Waters” was all about and became fascinated with the Spa Life. When I was 19, Japanese baths and massages introduced me to a different life style than we had in the west. And trips to Hot Water Cures all over the United States sparked in me a quest for health.
During the 1940s and 50s Glamour Days of Hollywood, I longed to learn “The Secret” of the Movie Stars’ beautiful skin. People “in the business” knew that ladies from Hungary mixed up strange concoctions in their kitchens and used them on the Movie Stars. I asked one of the ladies for her “Secret,” but of course then she forgot how to speak English.
After my graduation from Hollywood High School, my quest for “The Secret” intensified. I graduated from Beauty School. I still didn’t know “The Secret.” In Tokyo, Paris and London I learned about beauty but still didn’t find “The Secret.” So off to Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo I went to study Dietetics. Still “The Secret” eluded me.
Marriage, children, study, more study came along, but no answer. Degrees in Art and English hung on the wall, but the answer wasn’t in my head. Owning a beauty shop, directing a beauty school, teaching High School English were all wonderful, but still I wanted to know “The Secret.”
Then I met the eminent Dermatologist and Pharmacist, Dr. Howard Murad. He gave me a jar of cream and asked me to try it. The first day that I used the cream I realized that I had discovered “The Secret to Beautiful Skin.”
Since 1990 I have studied hydrotherapy, bodywork, and skin care in Turkey, the Czech Republic, China, Italy, England, Wales, and Russia. This explains the name, International Skin & Body Care. I long to give each person the wonderful Spa experiences that I have enjoyed.
Welcome to our World Class Day Spa.
To your health and beauty, Mimi Barre
Celebrate Redlands Orange Blossoms

International Day Spa is a Redlands, home-grown business deeply concerned with the Redlands quality of life. Owner, Mimi Barre, grew up in Southern California with an abundance of orange groves. She feels that the loss of California oranges is tragic. California is famous for its movies and its oranges. And the Inland Empire is most famous for oranges.
To preserve the nostalgic fragrance from her youth, Ms. Barre spent 9 years developing Redlands Orange Blossom lotion, body wash, and body polish. The scent captures the true perfume of the Orange Blossom.
Neroli is an essential oil distilled from the fragrant flowers of the Orange Blossoms. It is named after Anna Marie de la Tremoille, Princess of Nerola, a village near Rome, who wore this oil for perfume. Neroli rejuvenates the skin, improves circulation and eases stress. Orange Blossoms are traditional flowers for brides
In honor of the Redlands Festival held each year in April and May, International Day Spa created the Redlands Orange Blossom Deluxe Day at the Spa treatment. Proceeds from this service each year benefit the Inland Orange Conservancy. Inland Orange donates Oranges for the treatment and for fresh orange juice.

WHAT IS A DAY SPA?

The word SPA is from the town of that name in Belgium. Roman soldiers discovered the hot waters and called the area “Health Through Water.” In Latin, the acronym is SPA. It is synonymous with WATER TREATMENTS. A spa must have water therapies to be a true spa. A work-out gym or beauty shop without water therapies is not a spa. According to the International Spa Association, spas fall into three categories: The Destination Spa, The Resort Spa, and The Day Spa. The Destination Spa is the therapeutic "time out" week of renewal. You sleep there. The meals are provided by special chiefs, and there is an hour by hour routine of exercise, classes, meditation, etc. all included. The is the most expensive spa experience. The Resort Spa is a resort hotel or cruise ship that also provides exercise facilities, massages, facials, and hydro therapy. You sleep there and decide whether you dine on spa cuisine or full menu. You select and pay for each treatment that you would like. The Day Spa offers facials, massages, body treatments, and hydro therapy. You don't sleep there, so it is less expensive than the other choices. Also, your treats and treatments may take one hour to all day. This is the favorite choice for stressed people with time and money budgets.

Some Spas are Spartan and deal primarily with meditation or physical fitness. Others are extremely opulent and provide nurturing pampering. All should deal with the renewal and rejuvenation of your body, soul, and spirit.

The spa hydro therapists need to be knowledgeable in all areas of water treatments: underwater massage, Kneipp, Vichy shower, and Scotch hose or Gallien Jet. The therapists should be well educated in the use of steam, hot and cold herbal wraps, balneotherapy including oxygenating baths.

Spa personnel work in concert with Medical Doctors, Chiropractors, Dermatologists, and Dieticians. Before turning your body and psyche over to a practitioner, ask about the spa's standing in the medical community. In some communities, anyone can hang out a shingle and say that he is a masseuse. Check credentials and licensing.

What should you expect at a day spa? Number one, you should feel special. From the minute that you walk through the door, you should feel the warm, friendly, nurturing ambiance. Your treatment is designed to improve your health through the release of stress and tension. Your body and soul should feel renewed, and if you had a facial, your skin should feel dewy and revived.

Cost for a facial or massage will be from $65 to $120 for one hour. Water treatments will cost between $20 and $150, depending on the treatment. This is a small investment for the pleasure of delighting in the spa experience.

Hydrotherapy History
When the Roman Empire ruled the world, Roman soldiers were garrisoned all over Europe. They came upon a source of natural hot mineral water in what is now Belgium. The weary (and probably filthy) soldiers found that when they soaked and bathed in the hot water their muscle aches disappeared. Their skin felt smoother, and their overall health improved. The soldiers named the spa Health Through Water, or Salus Per Aquam . The name was shortened to SPA.
Every culture has used natural hot springs for their curative powers. In Vichy, France, the water is medicinal. For centuries people have been plunged into the waters for healing. At the Vichy clinic, doctors contemplated how non-ambulatory patients could benefit from the waters. They devised a shower of 5 showerheads extended from the ceiling under which a patient on a gurney could be wheeled. Thus the Vichy Shower was created. All the water for the treatments at International Skin & Body Care is softened and filtered by Morley Water Systems, but it has no magical properties. For your treatment, active products like Sea Algae or Mud will be applied to your body. The product will be removed with the Vichy Shower.

What I noticed was that the people were wonderfully healthy. In 1959 I visited spas in
Japan where Hot Water bathing is a ritual. After a visit to a Turkish Hammam bath near Ephesus, I studied
hydrotherapy in the Czech Republic at a host of famous spa towns.
My little business joined the International Spa Association as only the second Day Spa
to hold membership. I became a member of the International Society of Medical Hydrology
in Germany. I was thrilled to be in the first gr
